As a major national economic group, the Lusiaves Group has an increased responsibility to contribute to the prevention and minimization of the environmental impacts associated with its operations, by minimizing its atmospheric emissions.
In this regard, the Group has been operating facilities for the production of electricity through solar energy for five years. This clean energy source has enabled the production of 7,291,754 kWh of clean electricity.
Over the last five years, photovoltaic electricity production has grown gradually, and the Group currently operates 48 micro-generation units with an installed capacity of 5,890.41 kW.
Solar energy is considered clean energy, produced from sunlight, which does not generate waste or release greenhouse gases, unlike energy derived from non-renewable sources such as natural gas or coal. Over the past five years, by utilizing this technology, the Group has managed to reduce CO₂ emissions released into the atmosphere by approximately 4,400 tons, thus making a significant contribution to the prevention of global warming.
Global warming results in climate change and is considered one of the most significant global environmental problems today, threatening the balance of ecosystems. One of its primary effects is the melting of polar ice caps. Recent studies published in the journal Nature reveal that, between 2012 and 2017, Antarctica lost 219 billion tons of ice per year, representing a melting rate three times faster than that recorded in the two previous decades, when the phenomenon was stable (76 billion tons annually). This ice loss contributes to an average annual rise of 0.6 mm in sea levels.
The production and consumption of energy from clean sources are therefore of extreme importance for protecting the environment and maintaining people's quality of life. Since they do not generate greenhouse gases, they do not contribute to global warming. Furthermore, because there is no burning of fossil fuels, there is no generation of polluting gases or solid waste that could harm human health.
Clean energy is a key factor in ensuring the sustainable development of the planet.
